Graphite

• Successfully viewed the carbon atoms on an atomic scale
• Showed the hexagonal arrangement of surface atoms in a carbon lattice
• Calculated the mean seperation of atoms in the lattice = 2.47 angstroms

MoS₂

• Viewed the molybdenum and sulfer atoms on an atomic scale
• Identified different atoms in the lattice
• Confirmed the accepted arrangement of surface atoms in a MoS₂ lattice
• Calculated somewhat erroneous values for the seperation of atoms in the lattice
• Near separation = 1.63 angstroms; actual = 3.16
• Far separation = 2.91 angstroms; actual = 5.47

Sources of Error

• Miscalibration between the software and the STM hardware
• Inability to make single atom tips
• Vibration in the environment
