Measuring Charge
The following chart shows the data taken, the voltages required to balance spheres as well as the charge found from each balancing voltage. The average experimental value for the charge is also reported.
This graph shows the balancing voltages corresponding to the integral multiple of the charge. Ten lines should be in each set. The thicker lines represent two or more balancing voltages very close together.
The following graph shows the number of times a certain voltage balanced one of the spheres. The range used was 0.5 V. You can see that the voltages are around what is expected for 1e(~100V), 2e(~50V), and 3e(~34V). There are no balancing voltages in between these regions. This relates to the discreteness of the electric charge.
Checking the Mass and Estimation of the Boltzmann Constant
The following variables or measurements were the ones needed for the calculation of the mass and the Boltzmann constant.
