Physics 230 Prelab #6

Click Start to begin the exercise.

A. You will see a particle fired horizontally through a slit into a region where a magnetic field exists.  The magnetic field is out of the board.  Pause the animation before the particle leaves the screen. You can measure the x and y coordinates (in meters) of the particle by click-dragging on the screen.

1. Calculate the ratio of e/m for this particle using the instructions under Part 1 of the lab and Equations 2 and 5.  The value of v is 5.0 x 106 m/s and the value of B is 2.8 x 10-7 T.  Report your value of e/m in the form below.

B. Add an electric field by clicking here.   This will enable the slider shown below.

2.Set a value for the electric field on the slider and click the "Change electric field and run" button.  You will see the path of the particle influenced by both a magnetic and an electric field.  Vary the electric field and click the above button until you make the particle go through the slit on the right.   Report the magnitude (arbitrary units) and direction of the electric field in the form below.
