...memory.
CUPS utilities buffer the screen to memory when doing a pop-up panel and restore the screen when the panel disappears. This speeds up the user interface since calculations are minimized, but the program must write to a temporary file on the disk if heap memory is not available. This can be slow without a cached hard drive and may cause a crash if the disk is full or write protected.
