A Fixed
boundary condition is the easiest to implement.
- For the classical wave equation the right- (left-) traveling wave is set equal
to the negative of the left- (right-) traveling wave at the left (right) boundary.
- For all other equations, we set the function to zero at the boundaries.
As you will see in the exercises, these conditions
result in a reflected wave for parabolic PDEs. For the diffusion equation,
fixed boundaries will become ``sinks" that eventually reduce the function to
zero throughout the medium.
The conservation of mass,
, will therefore no longer be valid for this
equation.
