This chapter will examine a fully quantum mechanical treatment of atom--field interactions. The two--state atom of chapter two will be coupled to the quantized electromagnetic field of chapter three. The interaction of these two systems will be simulated. The effect of various initial fields on a single atom will be analyzed. This interaction will allow us to better understand the physical implications of various photon statistics.
