A typical RC-circuit as high-pass filter and low-pass filter:

The frequency of the ac source (10V amplitude) is varied between 1Hz  and 1MHz.

The ratio of the amplitudes (source/capacitor), called 'frequency characteristic', is represented in the plot (frequencies are in log scale).

The red resp. green curve represents the frequency characteristic of the resistor resp. capacitor.
