Energy
Section 2 Exercises:
- Run the applet with an initial temperature of T = 0 and H = 0. Let
the system evolve for a few seconds. Record the average energy.
Repeat this for the temperatures 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 5.0,
7.5, and 10. Plot this data and describe the functionality.
Discuss your results.
- Reset the simulation and clear the graph. Set T = 0 and H = 0.
Let the system evolve until it is all one color. Ramp the magnetic
field up to H = +5. Describe what happens to the spin lattice and to
the energy. Note at what values of H you see changes. Ramp the magnetic field down to H = -5 and describe what
happens. Go back and forth between the limits of H and describe what
happens to the energy.
- Repeat the simulation until the system evolves to completely to the
opposite color as that in the beginning of Exercise 2. Repeat the magnetic ramping and
describe what happens. Note at what values of H you see changes.
- Explain the behavior you found in Exercises 2 & 3 in terms of the
equation for the energy found in the Introduction.
- Increase the temperature to T = 1.0 and repeat Exercises 2-3. How
has the behavior changed from what you observed in Exercise 4.
