Impurity Ion in 1-D Lattice

One of the ions in the 1-D lattice of Section 4 has been substituted for a slightly shallower well.

Section 5 Exercises:

1. What has happened to the band structure?  Which levels have moved into the band gaps?
2. How has the introduction of the impurity affected the wave functions of the levels in the lowest band?  Examine each wave function carefully.
3. Where does the electron reside with the greatest probability for n=11 and n=22?
4. Where do you think the impurity ion energy levels would lie with respect to the bands if the impurity ion was replaced with another impurity that had a slightly deeper well than the rest of the lattice?
