Impurity Ion in 1-D Lattice
One of the ions in the 1-D lattice of Section 4 has been substituted for a
slightly shallower well.
Section 5 Exercises:
- What has happened to the band structure? Which levels have moved
into the band gaps?
- How has the introduction of the impurity affected the wave functions of
the levels in the lowest band? Examine each wave function carefully.
- Where does the electron reside with the greatest probability for n=11 and
n=22?
- Where do you think the impurity ion energy levels would lie with respect
to the bands if the impurity ion was replaced with another impurity that had
a slightly deeper well than the rest of the lattice?
