Call For Papers For 2002 PERC Proceedings

PEER-REVIEW PROCESS: The publication of the conference proceedings is the result of a strong belief on the part of the conference co-chairs that a written record of the scholarly work undertaken by physics education researchers will be a valuable resource in the future work of the community. As such, we welcome not just the submission of significant or final results, but also preliminary research results and discussions of works in progress. In order to reconcile this goal with a desire to provide a peer-reviewed avenue for publication, the proceedings will have two sections. One section will contain only publications that successfully navigate the peer-review process. The second section will contain manuscripts do not. If you would like to submit a manuscript and do not want to attempt to have it peer-reviewed, you may request that at the time of submission. Manuscripts that do not succeed in the peer-review process will automatically be published in the nonpeer-reviewed section of the proceedings unless the author requests otherwise.

ELIGIBILITY Anyone who registers for and attends the summer of 2002 Physics Education Research Conference (PERC) to be held in conjunction with the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) meeting in Boise, ID will be eligible to contribute one paper to the proceedings. In addition, in order for a paper to be accepted for publication, it must be presented at the PERC as either an invited oral presentation or a contributed poster presentation. You do NOT have to submit a paper in order to do a contributed poster presentation. All first authors on contributions to the proceedings must meet the requirements discussed above. Work presented at the main AAPT meeting is eligible for submission to the PERC. Presentation of the work at the main AAPT meeting is not required for submission to the PERC. The only way to contribute more than one paper is as a co-author with someone else. Everyone submitting a paper for publication in the proceedings will be required to help with the peer-review of other people's contributions.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: To submit a paper for publication in the conference proceedings, mail 4 copies of the manuscript to:

Scott Franklin
Rochester Institute of Technology
Department of Physics
85 Lomb Memorial Dr.
Rochester, New York 14623-5603

Manuscript submissions must be postmarked on or before July 22, 2002. No late submissions will be accepted.

FORMAT OF PAPERS: Papers must be ready for publication when submitted. In order for this to occur, the following guidelines must be followed: Papers must be written in English with 11 point, New Times Roman font. The title of the paper should be 14 point font. Single line spacing must be used with left and right margins of 1.5 inch. Top and bottom margins must be 1.25 inch. The text is to be formatted in two columns of 2.5-2.75 inches each with a center spacing of 0.50 inch. The text alignment must be ``justified''. The maximum length of a paper, including figures, is 4 pages formatted as discussed above. The page limit includes figures, figure captions and references. All labels on figures must be legible. (We realize that this means papers must be brief.)

FEE FOR PUBLICATION: Beyond the conference registration fee, there will be no additional fee required to contribute a paper for publication in the proceedings. Once published, the proceedings will be available for purchase. The purchase price of the proceedings is not included in the registration fee for the meeting. We estimate the cost of the proceedings to be $15, but the exact cost will depend on the number of papers submitted for publication. Orders for the proceedings will be taken at the conference.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does presenting a talk in a PER session of the main AAPT meeting qualify for manuscript inclusion in the proceedings?
No, only work presented at the PERC is eligible for inclusion in the conference proceedings.  Hence, presentation in a PER session of the main AAPT meeting does NOT qualify (the main meeting is not the PERC).  To qualify the manuscript for inclusion in the conference proceedings, you need to do a contributed poster presentation (or give an invited talk) at the PERC.

Are the manuscripts required to be black and white or can color be used?
Printing will be in black and white and so manuscripts should be submitted in black and white.

Why are manuscripts due BEFORE the conference?  Can I submit a manuscript AFTER the conference?
The deadline to submit the manuscript is BEFORE the conference in order to allow (force) reviewers to do reviews during the conference.  This will keep the turn around time short and allow reviewers to be influenced by interactions at the poster sessions and oral presentations. Modifications to the submitted manuscript that address the reviewers' comments can be made after the conference.  NO manuscripts will be accepted after the deadline of July 22, 2002.  Remember though, these papers are short, so there is still plenty of time to write one up.

I want to purchase a copy of the conference proceedings, how can I do so?
If you are attending the conference, you can order a copy of the proceedings there, but the proceedings will be available off site as well.  Once the exact sale price can be determined, we will post (here and on the listserv) the cost and procedure for ordering a copy of the proceeding if you are not able to attend at the conference.
