Description

Shown in the upper graph is the transcendental equation describing the bound-state energy levels of finite square well.  The red curve represent one side of the equation and the green curve the other side of the equation.  The bottom graph shows the potential energy function.  You may enter the well width, a,  and the well depth, V, using the sliders. Click the box and drag a slider to see the even state's transcendental equation. Restart

  1. As the potential energy well depth increases, what happens to the number of bound states? 
  2. As the potential energy well width increases, what happens to the number of bound states? 
  3. Can you describe why? Hint: think of what you know about the infinite square well.
