Copyright of Applets and Conditions of Use for Applets SECTION 8. Technical Support ------------------------------ SECTION 1. Contents of CD ------------------------------ The CD contains a README text file along with three main directories, "applets," "netscape," and "physletprob." In the applets directory you will find all of the Physlet Java applets. In the netscape directory you will find an installer of Netscape 4.0 in case you do not have an internet connection to download the latest Mozilla. In the physletprob directory you will find the curricular material that makes up the CD organized by part and then by chapter. We recommend that you access the html pages on the CD by navigating from the "default.html" page in the root directory. ------------------------------ SECTION 2. General Information ------------------------------ Point your web browser at default.html file in the root directory to access the Physlet problems on this CD. The Physlets CD is also available online at http://webphysics.davidson.edu/physletprob Physlets-"Physics Applets"-are small, flexible Java applets that can be used in a wide variety of WWW applications. Physlets require a Java 1.1 enabled browser that supports JavaScript to applet communication. Unfortunately, not all browsers support BOTH this communication and the Java 1.1 virtual machine. ------------------------- SECTION 3. System Requirements ------------------------- WINDOWS: · 400 MHz processor · Windows 2000/XP · 32 MB or more of available RAM (64MB recommended) · 4x CD-ROM drive (12x recommended) · 800x600 resolution set to 256 colors · Requires a browser supporting the Java 1.4 Virtual Machine and JavaScript to Java communication: Internet Explorer 5.5 with the Sun Java plugin 1.4; Mozilla 1.3 with the Sun Java plugin 1.4. · Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 © 2002 is required to view and print the pdfs of the Exploration Worksheets. · Internet connection only required for download of third party software. · A printer is required to print the Exploration Worksheets. We recommend the following Windows configuration(s): PC with 400 MHz processor Windows 2000/XP Internet Explorer 6.0 with either the Microsoft Java 1.1 VM or the Sun Java 1.4. Physlet Physics will also run using Mozilla 1.6 with the Sun Java 1.4. MACINTOSH: · 133 MHz processor (266 Mhz or higher recommended) · OS 10.3 (Panther) · 32 MB or more of available RAM (64MB recommended) · 4x CD-ROM drive (12x recommended) · Requires a browser supporting the Java 1.4 Virtual Machine and JavaScript to Java communication: Safari version 1.2· · Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 © 2002 is required to view and print the pdfs of the Exploration Worksheets. · Internet connection only required for download of third party software. · A printer is required to print the Exploration Worksheets. Mozilla 1.6 and the Sun Microsystems Java plugin 1.4 can be found at http://www.mozilla.org and http://java.sun.com, respectively. ------------------------- SECTION 4. Microsoft Windows ------------------------- Recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla support scripting using the Java 1.4 plugin from Sun Microsystems. The Microsoft Java 1.1 VM will run the Physlets on this CD. All Physlets have been tested on Mozilla 1.6 and Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. ------------------------- SECTION 5. Apple Power PC ------------------------- Although both Java 1.1 and JavaScript are currently implemented, the ability of JavaScript to communicate with a Java applet is still problematic on Apple computers. Some Physlets will run in interactive mode, that is, without script, using the latest Apple Java Virtual Machine. However, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for the Mac will not support JavaScript to Java communication. We believe that this problem will shortly be solved. Apple has announced support for LiveConnect using the Safari browser under OSX.3 (Panther). ------------------------- SECTION 6. Copyright of Text and Copyright of Problems ------------------------- Unless otherwise noted at the bottom of an html page, Physlet Problems contained on this CD, that is, the text and associated script, are copyrighted by Prentice Hall. Instructors may post Prentice Hall copyrighted Physlet problems from the Physlet CD for non-commercial use on their own class-related websites provided those problems copyrighted by Prentice Hall are clearly marked as such and the following copyright notice is given on each page containing Prentice Hall problems: "Problems x, xx, xxx Copyright Prentice Hall. All rights reserved." Instructors may not otherwise distribute, or publish them without express written permission from the Publisher. Prentice Hall Companion Websites contain additional Physlet(r) Problems that are copyrighted by Prentice Hall. These sites include: Principles with Applications (5 th ed.) and Physics for Scientists and Engineers, both by Douglas Giancoli and College Physics by Jerry Wilson and Anthony Buffa. These problems are not included in the permission to post granted above. Commercial use of any Physlet Problems from this CD, or edited versions thereof, in printed or electronic form requires the written permission of the copyright holder. Instructors wishing to author and post their own Physlet problems should consult the conditions of use below. ------------------------- SECTION 7. Copyright of Applets and Conditions of Use for Applets ------------------------- Physlets, that is, the applets themselves, may be used to author new problems and these problems may be distributed along with the Physlet jar files for non-profit, educational purposes without requesting permission under the following conditions: 1) That the text and script of Physlets Problems, that is, problems that make use of Physlets to provide animation, visualization, or other types of educational content, be made available to others by placing them in the public domain. 2) That Davidson College should be credited as the source of the Physlet on at least one HTML page of the instructional unit where these applets are being used. (An instructional unit would be a course or a collection of problems with a unifying theme.) A small Davidson logo or simply the name "Davidson College" with a link to the Davidson College Physlet Archive serves this purpose. 3) Credit does NOT have to be given on every problem or HTML page that contains a Physlet problem. We encourage authors to make the integration of Physlets into their curriculum material as seamless as possible. 4) Publications which result from using Physlets will reference the Physlet site http://webphysics.davidson.edu/applets/applets.html. Please share your work. Authors who have written Physlet problems are encouraged to send us short email with a link to their problems. ------------------------- SECTION 8.
